TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Government recently unveiled 550 citations issued in the first month of implementing the YouBike penalty point system. In contrast, the New Taipei City Government relied solely on public reports for enforcement due to labor shortages.
Wu Cheng-yen (吳政諺), an official from the Transportation Department of the New Taipei City Government (新北市交通局), reported 12 violations in July and noted that all cases stemmed from public complaints.
Wu highlighted that the most common violations involved rushing pedestrians and riding on sidewalks less than 2 meters wide. He added that most riders were unaware these actions were against regulations.
Wu emphasized the need for continued public education and the reinforcement of the point system. He assured that, for now, they would not increase enforcement personnel but are discussing collaborative efforts with the police, aiming to integrate police records of traffic violations with the point system, ensuring a more comprehensive approach to enforcement.
