TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Doris Brougham (彭蒙惠), founder of Studio Classroom (空中英語教室), passed away on Tuesday evening (Aug. 6) at Mackay Memorial Hospital, Tamsui Branch, at the age of 98. Brougham had just celebrated her birthday a day earlier.
An American educator and missionary, Brougham came to Taiwan in 1951 and founded Studio Classroom in 1962. She received Taiwanese citizenship in June last year, after a lifetime of devotion to English education in the country. Tuning in to Brougham's radio lessons is a shared memory among many Taiwanese, and it became an integral part of their English education.
Reflecting on the inception of Studio Classroom, Brougham once mentioned she started it because Taiwan was transitioning from an agricultural society to an industrial one, increasing the desire to learn English.
Following the announcement of her passing, numerous individuals and followers expressed their condolences online, appreciating her contributions to English education in Taiwan.
