PARIS (TVBS News) — The Olympic Games in Paris have brought a wave of enthusiasm and pride to Taiwan as its athletes compete on the world stage. François Chihchung Wu, head of Taiwan's Representative Office in France, has been instrumental in highlighting the importance of Taiwan's presence at this global event.

Wu told TVBS News about Taiwan's unique international status and the significance of its participation in the Olympic Games. "Taiwan has a very special international status. So, the fact that we are able to join the Olympic Games shows Taiwan is part of the world," Wu said. He stressed that even though Taiwan is not recognized in the same way as other countries, its participation in such important international events showcases its involvement in global affairs.

One of the notable challenges faced by the Taiwanese delegation was securing a place at the Levallois Sporting Center. Initially, there was no guarantee that Taiwan would be included. However, due to effective communication and cooperation, the city of Levallois displayed Taiwan's national flag alongside those of the United States, Canada, and Australia, despite provoking China's displeasure. "Later, because of our very good understanding and exchange, the city even put our national flag in the city," Wu noted.

Wu highlighted the strong support Taiwan received from France, particularly during sporting events. He recounted the enthusiastic cheers of "Allez, Allez Taiwan" from the crowd during a badminton match between Taiwan and China, illustrating the camaraderie and support from the French audience. "Everyone was hailing Taiwan, Taiwan, 'Allez, Allez Taiwan' to support Taiwan," Wu recalled. Despite political complexities, the event underscored the identity and spirit of Taiwanese athletes.

Participation in the Olympics has also opened doors for broader discussions about Taiwan, both culturally and politically. "If we don't have this Olympic event, we will not have all these kinds of discussions of the kind of possibility in Levallois, in Parc de La Villette for the Cultural Olympics to talk about Taiwan," Wu stated. He believes that Taiwan's involvement in such events is crucial for raising awareness and engaging in meaningful dialogues about the country's political issues.

Wu also emphasized the importance of Taiwan's diversity as a source of strength and visibility in the international community. "I continue to believe what makes the force of Taiwan is the diversity," he said. He remains committed to fostering good relations between Taiwan and France, as well as with Europe and other regions worldwide. Wu's vision for Taiwan includes maintaining its visibility and active participation in the international arena.

Reflecting on his tenure as the head of Taiwan's Representative Office in France, Wu expressed pride in his efforts to strengthen Taiwan's presence at global events. As he transitions to his new role as Deputy Foreign Minister in September, he leaves behind a legacy of enhanced diplomatic ties and international recognition for Taiwan. His work underscores the vital role of Taiwan's diplomacy in maintaining its stature on the global stage.

Amid political pressures, Taiwan continues to support its athletes in international competitions. The ongoing efforts of François Wu and other Taiwanese diplomats highlight the critical importance of maintaining strong international relationships and advocating for Taiwan's place in the world.
