TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The director-general of the Tourism Administration at the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) announced on Tuesday (Dec. 12) plans to seek approval for opening housekeeping positions for migrant workers due to the severe shortage of hotel service staff in Taiwan. The proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Labor (MOL) for consideration.

Speaking at the 2023 Tourism Digital Transition Expo, Director-General Chou Yung-hui explained that a second phase of expert review would follow once the MOL receives the requested supplemental information. Chou highlighted the significant impact of the hotel industry on local economies within the tourism sector.

Chou encouraged local workers, especially middle-aged and older individuals and women, to explore job opportunities in the industry. Ongoing communication with the MOL is focused on addressing the details of migrant worker policies.

Regarding the timing of these discussions, Chou mentioned that relevant data would be organized and promptly presented to the MOL, with further updates to follow.
