TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Lai Ching-te, the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate, declared on Facebook Monday (Nov. 20) that he has chosen Hsiao Bi-khim as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2024 election.
Lai expressed strong confidence in this decision, stating in his post: "I believe this is the decision everyone has been hoping for, and it is also the best decision." He highlighted his selection of Hsiao, currently Taiwan's representative to the U.S.
Lai commended Hsiao for her exceptional performance, crediting her for the significant improvement in Taiwan-U.S. relations in recent years. "I believe Hsiao is undoubtedly a standout in Taiwan's current diplomatic work and a rare talent in our country's diplomacy," he wrote.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) echoed this sentiment, praising Hsiao's substantial impact on Taiwan-U.S. relations during her tenure. Recognized both in Taiwan and the U.S., she is celebrated as an extraordinary diplomat.
MOFA announced that Hsiao, a former DPP legislator, tendered her resignation at 9 a.m. that day. Her resignation is being processed per standard regulations and is expected to become official shortly, as per MOFA.
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has granted Hsiao leave during this transition period.
