NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te on Friday (Nov. 17) urged Taiwan to progress forward, highlighting the significance of the 2024 election in shaping the island's future.
Speaking at a rally for a DPP legislator candidate, Lai reflected on the recent Biden-Xi meeting. He noted that U.S. President Joe Biden urged Chinese President Xi Jinping not to alter Taiwan's status quo by force and to refrain from meddling in Taiwan's elections.
"We must have confidence," Lai said.
Shifting focus, Lai added that the cross-strait issue has evolved beyond the historical civil war context involving the Kuomintang and the Communist Party during the Chiang family era. He declared, "It is already an international issue.”
Lai underscored the criticality of the 2024 election in determining Taiwan's destiny, advocating for Taiwan's independence from reliance on China.
"In this election, we must not succumb to the opposition's fearmongering, particularly their use of war to intimidate Taiwanese voters," Lai cautioned.
