TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Koinu made landfall at Eluanbi at 8:20 a.m. on Thursday (Oct. 5), lingering for about five minutes before moving back to sea, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
CWA meteorologist Wu Wan-hua explained that the eye of the typhoon was located approximately 20 kilometers east of Eluanbi at 6 a.m. and continued its track westward.
Typhoon Koinu has wreaked havoc in southern Taiwan, generating winds staggeringly exceeding Level 17 on the Beaufort scale. Orchid Island recorded a wind speed of 95.2 meters per second, setting a new record in Taiwan's 126-year meteorological history.
The CWA has issued a torrential rain advisory for Hualien County, Taitung County, the Hengchun Peninsula, and mountainous areas of Taipei City and Pingtung County.
In the southern regions, strong gusts resulted in several trees and electricity poles uprooting. As a precautionary measure, residents are advised to exercise extra caution until the typhoon veers away, expected tomorrow.
Typhoon Koinu became the second typhoon to land on the island this year, following Typhoon Haikui, which made landfall on Sept. 3.
