TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Typhoon Koinu approaches southern Taiwan, officials in Xinxing Village, Jinfeng Township, Taitung County announced a preemptive evacuation on Wednesday (Oct. 4). More than 300 residents are to be relocated to Da Wang Elementary School gymnasium.
Xinxing Village is known to be vulnerable to massive landslides during typhoons, making evacuation mandatory for the locals. In September, Typhoon Haikui wreaked havoc in Taitung, necessitating the evacuation of 360 people from Xinxing Village.
The local township office has prepared two weeks' worth of living supplies and food for the residents. This includes necessities such as rice, noodles, instant noodles, mineral water, and powdered milk to ensure that residents' basic needs are met throughout the typhoon.
The Central Weather Administration anticipates that Typhoon Koinu will make landfall in Taitung, Pingtung, or Hengchunon on Thursday.
