TAITUNG (TVBS News) — Typhoon Koinu unleashed a destructive onslaught on Taitung County's coastal regions on Thursday (Oct. 5), bringing with it towering 7-meter-high waves.
The preceding evening, county magistrates and city mayors across central, southern, and eastern Taiwan took the proactive step of suspending work and classes as the storm's fierce winds peaked at a maximum sustained speed of 162 kph.
At Taitung's Fugang Port, colossal waves crashed upon the pier, inundating the area. The Haibin Park, celebrated for its substantial artistic steel structure, also succumbed to relentless gales, resulting in significant damage.
Despite stern warnings from officials, residents flocked to the harbor, undeterred, to witness the historic waves firsthand.
As Typhoon Koinu continued its trajectory through southern Taiwan, an abundance of driftwood washed ashore, while trees succumbed to the storm's might, sending motorcycles tumbling to the ground.
