NANTOU (TVBS News) — Rescuers continued evacuation efforts at Lushan hot springs district in central Taiwan's Nantou County on Tuesday (Aug. 8) as heavy rainfall triggering mudslides flooded the area.
Local authorities planned to evacuate 50 more residents and visitors today. In the early morning, a helicopter arrived to carry out three older residents, including two in their seventies and one over a hundred years old.
The three elders were transported to the nearby National Ren-ai Agricultural Vocational Senior High School.
As many were trapped on the other side of the Talurwan River, rescuers set up zip lines to help locals get across. In particular, a young mother and her 7-month-old baby were successfully transported to dry land this morning.
Though Typhoon Khanun passed by Taiwan briefly in the past week, the accompanying heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in central Taiwan as rescue efforts continue.
