TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Doksuri is expected to become a severe typhoon by 8 p.m. on Tuesday (July 25), according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). The storm is currently moderate in strength but may intensify soon. A land warning was issued at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
As of Tuesday morning, Typhoon Doksuri was about 610 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi and moving at 15 kilometers per hour in the west-northwest direction. The CWB issued a sea warning on Monday and a land warning today. The CWB also warned of the possibility of long waves along the coasts of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.
Currently, some parts of Taiwan are already experiencing long waves, and the southeastern region and the coastal areas of the Hengchun Peninsula may experience wave heights of 6 meters or higher. The CWB cautioned people living around seaside areas to be careful.
The CWB predicts that Typhoon Doksuri will either maintain its intensity or continue to intensify within the next 24 hours. However, it is expected to weaken significantly when it moves toward China on Friday.
Rainfall will be more concentrated on Tuesday in the latter half of the day due to the typhoon's outer circulation. The eastern part of Taiwan will experience rain, and the northern regions will experience gusts.
On Wednesday, the typhoon will likely approach Taiwan, leading to significant rainfall in the southeastern and southern parts of the island and brief showers in the western half of Greater Taipei. On Thursday, torrential rain is expected in the eastern, southeastern, and southern mountainous regions and outlying islands.
It has been almost four years since Taiwan was last affected by a typhoon, the most recent being Typhoon Bailu in August 2019. However, Typhoon Doksuri may break this record. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing timely updates for the public.
