WASHINGTON (TVBS News) — TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu provided insights into the impact of the overseas trips Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and former President Ma Ying-jeou have undertaken on Taiwan's 2024 presidential election.
Tsai and Ma stand out as influential figures for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT).
On his trip to China, Ma stressed the importance of peace and dialogue between Taiwan and China. At the same time, Tsai touted the importance of democracy and human rights on her trips to Guatemala, Belize, and the U.S.
"Tsai has aligned with the U.S. government while Ma and the KMT hope the message of peace across the Taiwan Strait would appeal to some Taiwanese citizens who believe the U.S. and Tsai's government are placing too much emphasis on democracy and human rights rather than economic interests and peaceful dialogues," Yu said.
Whether it be "peace through dialogue or peace through a stronger defense," Yu believes these underlying messages will impact the KMT and DPP run-on in the upcoming elections.
