TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has just taken office, but there won't be any honeymoon period. The Taipei Dome, and the construction of MRT routes are all pressing issues waiting for the new mayor.
Prior to the election, he promised that the scheduled construction period of the Taipei MRT East Circular Line would remain unchanged.
However, whether it's the East Circular Line, or the North and South Line, both under planning at this stage, it will be hard to complete them even if Chiang were to serve 2 terms, in 8 years.
The Taipei Dome is also a presing dilemma for the city that has yet to be solved. Chiang Wan-an said, "It was originally promised to the citizens that the Taipei Dome will be opened within a year, and we will still go all out toward this goal. "
The dome was originally scheduled to be completed in 2015.However, eight years have passed since, and the former Mayor Ko Wen-je was unable to give the people of Taipei an answer.
"We shouldn't forget the Itaewon incident. When it comes to public safety, in the arena, a venue with a capacity of 40,000 people, can it allow 40,000 people to leave their seats in a short period of time? I think this is a very big test. I think there is still a long way to go before we can convince the citizens of Taipei that the Arena is a safe stadium," said Liang-chun Lin, a Taipei City Councilor
In addition to the Taipei Dome, transportation, housing, childbirth and education issues are among the many problems at hand for the new mayor.
