TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Eslite Spectrum Corp. confirmed on Tuesday (Jan. 3) that it will close its Taipei Xinyi Eslite Bookstore by December this year.
The Xinyi bookstore is set to close after 17 years despite its popularity as the company was unable to extend its lease from the landlord.
As one of the biggest bookstores in Taiwan, the popular tourist destination houses around 4,500 foreign language books and is the only 24-hour bookstore in Taiwan. It began operating 24/7 after the closure of Eslite Dunnan store in May 2020 after its lease was up.
Eslite assured the public that they intend to continue with a 24-hour bookstore, but whether that would be the Nanxi store or the Songyan store remains to be seen.
According to reports, Xinyi Eslite's landlord, Uni-President Group intends to repurpose the building into a department store to extend the reach of its current shopping center beside the bookstore.
Though book lovers were devastated by the news, Eslite confirmed that the opening of new stores in Xindian and Taichung ares still on track, as both are expected to launch later this year.
