TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan’s ruling and main opposition parties recently locked horns over whether the mini-three links should be restarted between Taiwan and China.
According to Kuomintang member Chen Yu-jen, China is eager to resume such transportation, but Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang remains to be persuaded.
The premier has voiced concerns of Chinese residents traveling to Taiwan for the sole purpose of acquiring COVID medicine as the pandemic worsens across the strait.
Speaking before the press recently, Su remarked, "Because China has been suspected of covering COVID cases. We feel the situation isn't OK, so we need to be more vigilant."
Chen refuted this statement, however, pointing out that most that need this type of transportation are Taiwanese living on offshore islands.
In fact, more than 8,000 residents in Kinmen petitioned for operations to resume so they can be in Taiwan in time for Chinese New Year.
Taiwan government’s reservations toward the possible re-opening is likely due to China’s continuous ban on exports from Taiwan. In particular, the case of Kinmen liquor has been heavily discussed.
To this, Chen said China has expressed that as long as documents are in order, there is no ban.
She added that a cross-department discussion will take place in Taiwan soon to determine the nation’s next steps toward relevant issues.
