TAIPEI (TVBS News) – A White House official issued a statement Monday (Nov. 28) in response to China's crackdown on zero-COVID protests that spread across China over the weekend.

The protest spread in multiple major cities, including Shanghai and Beijing. People were seen on the streets holding sheets of white paper, chanting, demanding changes to zero-COVID regulations, and challenging local police.

"We've long said everyone has the right to peacefully protest, in the United States and around the world, this includes in the PRC," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

Kirby added that the U.S. is closely watching the protests. "We're watching this closely, as you might expect, we would. And again, we continue to stand up and support the right of peaceful protest," Kirby said. "And I think we're going to watch this closely and we'll see where things go."
