NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A worker surnamed Li faced charges of manslaughter and was released on NT$30,000 bail on Friday (July 21), a day following the tragic death of a 21-year-old university student. The unfortunate incident occurred when a 30-kilogram air conditioning unit fell on the student while waiting at a bus stop in New Taipei City.
Li, 31, was taken into custody by the police as he was installing the air conditioning unit at the time of the accident. He reportedly confessed that his expertise lay in installing multi-split air conditioners and that he was unfamiliar with the proper installation procedures for window-type units. In response to the situation, he sought assistance from a coworker.
Initial investigations suggested that improper installation by Li might have led to the accident. The victim, surnamed Huang, was identified as a National Chengchi University student.
Huang suffered a severe head laceration and multiple leg fractures after the air conditioning unit plummeted from the 17th floor of an apartment building, striking her head. Despite immediate medical attention at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, she showed no signs of life and was tragically declared dead on the scene.
The incident has sparked concerns regarding construction safety measures, prompting calls for stricter audits.
In response, Huang's parents expressed their grievances at the police station. They questioned the lack of protective measures during the installation and emphasized their intention to investigate relevant liabilities in this unfortunate event.
