TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Talim, the fourth typhoon this year, is heading toward Guangdong Province and is expected to intensify into a moderate typhoon. From Monday (July 17) to Wednesday (July 19), Taiwan will be affected by a monsoon gyre, resulting in a high possibility of afternoon thunderstorms and localized torrential rains.
Over the weekend, the peripheral circulation of Typhoon Talim has already impacted Taiwan, causing rainfall in the windward areas of eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula, as well as afternoon convective thunderstorms in the western regions. Coastal winds and waves have also intensified. However, the overall impact of the typhoon on Taiwan is not significant.
Starting this week, Taiwan will continue to be influenced by the monsoon gyre, and southerly winds will gradually shift to the southeast. The windward areas of eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula will experience intermittent showers, while there is a high likelihood of afternoon convective thunderstorms in the western and northeastern regions.
Due to the expected occurrence of localized heavy thunderstorms and widespread rainfall in mountainous and low-lying areas, it is advisable to carry rain gear when going out in the afternoon and exercise caution when exploring mountainous areas or riversides.
In terms of temperatures, highs could reach 33 to 35 degrees Celsius. The Greater Taipei area and mountainous regions in Taiwan's central or southern part could reach 36 degrees Celsius or higher. It is necessary to take sun precautions.
