TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Health Bureau announced on Monday (July 3) the top 10 causes of death in Taipei last year, unveiling that cancer remained the leading cause of death in Taipei, followed by heart diseases and COVID-19.

According to the report, Taipei recorded 21,047 deaths last year, marking an increase of 2,395 people or 12.8% compared to 2010.

The mortality rate was 841.0 per 100,000 population, indicating a significant increase of 15.6% from the previous year, the highest recorded increment in history.

Experts attributed this surge to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and population aging. Of the additional 2,395 deaths, 53.7% were primarily caused by COVID-19.

Furthermore, 82.9% of the total deaths were individuals aged 65 or above, with 90.2% of the COVID-19-related deaths falling in the same age group.

Fan Ju-hsin, Director of the Statistics Office at the Taipei City Health Bureau, explained that eight out of the top 10 causes of death were chronic diseases, accounting for 62.4% of the total deaths.
