Approaching Typhoon Mawar raises concerns in Taiwan

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is bracing for the impact of Typhoon Mawar as the storm edges closer this week. The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has warned that the typhoon will be closest to Taiwan from Wednesday to Thursday, with its effects already being felt since today and expected to persist until Friday.

Greater Taipei and Yilan will endure the most of the storm's outer wind circle, leading to increased rainfall in these areas. As Typhoon Mawar gradually moves toward the waters northeast of Taiwan, the focus of heavy rain will shift to the northern mountainous regions.

While rain pours in some parts, residents in the western region must also contend with scorching temperatures. The following two days will bring intense heat to western Taiwan, with temperatures soaring to around 34-35 degrees Celsius today and possibly surpassing 36 degrees Celsius in inland locations like Tainan and Kaohsiung.

Although Typhoon Mawar has been downgraded to a moderate typhoon, the potential for significant rainfall should not be underestimated, the CWB said.

Coastal regions have already experienced prolonged wave activity over the weekend. Orchid Island and Taitung reported waves reaching up to 6 meters, while the eastern coast witnessed waves ranging from 3 to 4 meters.

Throughout the latter part of today, coastal waves are projected to continue increasing, urging caution among individuals planning seaside activities.

A sea warning could be issued as early as tonight or tomorrow morning (May 30). Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates to ensure public safety.
