TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Mawar, the second typhoon of the year, regained strength on Thursday (May 25) as it escalated to a severe typhoon at 8 a.m., according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). Moving west-northwest at 18 kilometers per hour, the typhoon could impact Taiwan earlier next week.
The CWB has issued warnings about the peripheral circulation of Typhoon Mawar, which will result in increased rainfall in several areas on the windward side, including the Northern Coast, Greater Taipei area, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Meanwhile, the western region will continue to experience hot weather unless Mawar makes landfall.
The extent of Typhoon Mawar's impact on Taiwan will be influenced by a high-pressure system expected on May 29-30. Forecasts indicate that the most significant impact will occur from Monday to Wednesday next week.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and caution the public to remain vigilant. While Typhoon Mawar does not pose an immediate threat, the possibility of issuing a marine typhoon warning after next Monday cannot be ruled out, they said. Residents must stay updated on weather advisories and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety.
