Ko stated that the person, who identified as an assistant to a senator from Alaska, said that American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Chairperson Laura Rosenberger wanted to speak with him. In addition, Ko disclosed that he encountered various individuals, including someone purporting to be a United Nations commissioner and a former U.S. Congressional aide, who suggested that the U.S. favored a coalition between the Kuomintang (KMT) and TPP. With Taiwan’s presidential election approaching, Ko expressed concerns about the influence of intermediaries and fraudsters in the electoral process, emphasizing the need for a clear-headed approach to combat misinformation.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim expresses confidence in the trust the U.S. places in President Tsai Ing-wen and assures that her running mate, presidential candidate Lai Ching-te, will continue Tsai’s diplomatic policies if elected. The Tainan District Court has sentenced Lin Hsin-wu to death twice and deprived him of his civil rights for life for the murder of two police officers in 2022. Lin brutally killed Tainan City Police Bureau officers Tu Ming-cheng and Tsao Jui-chieh, using a spring knife and firearms while pursuing a suspected car thief. Despite defense arguments about Lin’s impaired behavioral control due to severe alcohol use disorder, the court dismissed them. Taiwan still practices capital punishment, and the issue of its abolition has become a focus of public debate. Currently, there are 38 inmates on death row in Taiwan awaiting execution.

KMT presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih has expressed his willingness to renegotiate survey results that could determine the final joint ticket with TPP candidate Ko Wen-je, even if he loses. Taiwan People’s Party presidential candidate Ko Wen-je’s disapproval rating has increased by 14.5 percentage points to 42.3%, making him the most unpopular among the contenders, according to a recent poll. The survey also revealed that Democratic Progressive Party candidate Lai Ching-te has an approval rating of 33% and a disapproval rating of 39.5%, while Kuomintang candidate Hou You-yi has an approval rating of 27.3% and a disapproval rating of 32%. Independent candidate Terry Gou received an approval rating of 17.9% and a disapproval rating of 33.9%. Compared to a previous poll conducted in May 2023, all four candidates saw an increase in disapproval ratings and a decline in approval ratings. Notably, Ko’s disapproval rating increased by 14.5 percentage points, while Gou’s approval rating fell by 16.1 percentage points.

The Taipei High Administrative Court ruled in favor of indigenous Atayal tribesman Bawtu Payen, allowing him to register his Romanized name at a household registration office in Luzhou. The court upheld the constitutional right of indigenous people to determine their names and stated that refusing to allow the Romanized version of indigenous names infringes upon this right. Payen had previously been denied using his Romanized tribal name on his ID card, prompting him to take the case to the administrative court. This is the first ruling in favor of an indigenous person registering their tribal name in Roman letters. The Ministry of the Interior respected the ruling and has been considering allowing indigenous people to register in their traditional names or Roman pinyin since February 2022.
