The weakening northeastern monsoon in Taiwan has resulted in temperatures staying above 17 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan on Wednesday. The arid and chilly influence will persist on Friday, with high temperatures ranging from 18-19 degrees in the north, 22-24 degrees in central Taiwan, 25-26 degrees in the south, and 21-22 degrees in Hualien and Taitung. This weather pattern is expected to continue until next Wednesday, providing Taiwan with a reliable forecast.

A Bitcoin mining operations group in Taichung, Taiwan will be indicted on charges of aggravated theft for stealing 1.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from Taipower, costing the state-owned enterprise nearly NT＄77 million. The group, led by a man surnamed Huang, was discovered through five rounds of investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau’s crime prevention division. The division seized stolen electricity equipment, Bitcoin mining machines, and illicit gains totaling over NT＄80 million. The Taichung District Prosecutors Office identified the site manager, financier, and individuals responsible for setting up the mining operation. Two miners, Cheng and Su, chose sites where the wiring was on the verge of melting due to constant high-speed operation at high temperatures, endangering nearby establishments such as a hotpot restaurant and an after-school program. The prosecutors noted the malicious attitude displayed by the two miners and have requested a heavy sentence.

Taiwan experienced its lowest temperature of the winter season with a high of 18.3 degrees Celsius reported at Hualien Liyu Lake, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The island-wide temperature ranged between 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Despite the weakening of the northeast monsoon, it was forecasted to be cloudy to clear over Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu regions. Isolated showers were expected in the southeast and the Hengchun Peninsula, with a chance of showers in other mountainous areas during the afternoon. Afternoon temperatures were predicted to warm up to 30 degrees Celsius nationwide. A stalled front from Zhejiang, China, and extending west to Sichuan, China, is approaching Taiwan, potentially bringing cooler weather to the northern and northeastern regions. Local sporadic showers are expected in Kinmen Matsu regions, with the possibility of local heavy rain estimated for the Keelung North Coast and northeastern mountain regions. Along with Penghu, central and southern regions of Taiwan are expected to continue to experience mostly cloudy to clear weather, with the possibility of afternoon showers in the mountains.

The strongest northeast monsoon of the season is set to reach Taiwan by Friday evening and will last for four days, according to meteorologist Wu Der-rong. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions for the cold. The Central Weather Administration predicts mostly clear to partly cloudy skies on Wednesday, with high temperatures ranging from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius in the western regions and 27 to 29 degrees in the eastern regions. The northeast monsoon weakening will result in concentrated rain in the eastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula, with minimal precipitation elsewhere. Wu attributes the stable, sunny weather and significant rise in temperature from Wednesday through Friday to the influence of ＂Indian summer＂. However, Wu warns of significantly colder weather by next week, with Taipei’s minimum temperature potentially dropping to around 18 degrees and lows across the flatlands likely to dip below 15 degrees.

Taiwan health authorities have warned the public to take preventative measures against dengue fever, as nearly 300 cases have been reported nationwide this year, including the first domestic case reported in Tainan in June.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) pointed out that strong southwest winds have resulted in foehn winds in Taitung County. CWB also issued heat advisories for several cities and counties on Wednesday (July 5). Pingtung County and Hualien County are under an orange alert, with a high probability of extreme temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius. 

New Taipei City Fire Department has recently acquired 16 fire blankets to enhance their firefighting capabilities when dealing with electric vehicle (EV) fires. The move comes in response to the growing concern over the potential dangers posed by these fires, which can reach temperatures as high as 900 degrees Celsius.
