TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) welcomed Keiji Furuya (古屋圭司), chair of the Japan-ROC Diet Members' Consultative Council (日華議員懇談會), at the Office of the President (總統府) on Monday (March 16). President Lai expressed gratitude for Furuya's long-standing support of Taiwan-Japan parliamentary exchanges and advocacy on key issues, which he said demonstrates Japan's steadfast support for Taiwan.
Lai emphasized Taiwan's commitment to strengthening its self-defense capabilities amid the expansion of "authoritarian forces." He highlighted plans to deepen cooperation with Japan in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and energy sectors to build a secure and reliable supply chain. He stated, "Collaboration between Taiwan and Japan will enhance regional economic security and industrial resilience."
In his speech, Furuya noted Japan's 2025 policy change that allowed the registration of "Taiwan" in residency records, a move warmly received by Taiwanese in Japan. He described it as a gesture of respect for Taiwan's identity and a guarantee of human rights and dignity. Furuya also proposed cultural exchanges between Japan's Self-Defense Forces, Taiwan's military, and U.S. military bands, aiming for trilateral cooperation that symbolizes peace and friendship.
Earlier that day, both leaders attended the opening ceremony of the ninth Yushan Forum (玉山論壇), where Lai thanked Furuya for his actions that highlight Japan's support and importance placed on Taiwan. He also praised Furuya's significant role in promoting Taiwan-Japan relations and regional peace and stability, stating that the Taiwanese people hold his contributions in high regard.
