TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chunghwa Post (中華郵政), Taiwan's national postal service, will discontinue the international registered small packet (收國際掛號小包) on April 1. The agency announced on Monday (March 16) it will launch a replacement ePacket service on the same date, offering more competitive pricing. The decision aligns with Universal Postal Union (UPU, 萬國郵政聯盟) policy and addresses growing demand in global cross-border e-commerce.
Chunghwa Post will expand the ePacket service from 24 countries or regions to all destinations accepting export airmail, significantly broadening coverage for senders. The discontinued international registered small packet offered features including recipient signature, written inquiry, mail tracking, and compensation for lost items. Chunghwa Post explained that the ePacket, while competitive in pricing and offering tracking, lacks written inquiry, compensation, and recipient signature services.
The UPU has eliminated registered small packets containing goods, restricting registration services to document-type mail only under new international postal regulations. Chunghwa Post noted a market shift toward services offering tracking, higher operational efficiency, and competitive pricing in the cross-border e-commerce sector. The discontinued service required recipient signatures and more manual handling, incurring higher operational costs compared to the ePacket's fully online tracking and no-signature approach. ◼
