TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market surged Friday (Jan. 2), closing up 386.21 points at 29,349.81, a 1.33% increase with trading volume reaching NT$648.844 billion (around US$20.73 billion). The Taiwan Stock Exchange's weighted index opened at 29,016.68, reaching an intraday high of 29,363.43 and a low of 29,007.75. The gains came as technology stocks led the rally across multiple sectors.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), the world's largest contract chipmaker, closed NT$35 (around US$1.12) higher at a record NT$1,585 (around US$50.64), a 2.26% rise. Foxconn (鴻海), a major electronics manufacturer, closed at NT$232 (around US$7.41), up NT$1.5 (around US$0.05), a 0.65% increase. Delta Electronics (台達電) closed at NT$995 (around US$31.79), up NT$32 (around US$1.02), or 3.32%.
MediaTek (聯發科), a leading semiconductor company, ended at NT$1,470 (around US$46.96), up NT$40 (around US$1.28), a 2.8% gain. In the memory sector, Winbond (華邦電) hit the daily limit, closing at NT$90.8 (around US$2.90), while Nanya Technology (南亞科) rose NT$7.25 (around US$0.23) to close at NT$207 (around US$6.61). Innolux (群創), boosted by a major international order, traded 784,000 shares, closing at NT$18.1 (around US$0.58), up 6.16%.
Robotics stocks performed well, with Solomon (所羅門), Syntec (新代), and NEXCOM (新漢) rising 2.79%, 2.09%, and 2.53%, respectively. In the silicon photonics sector, LandMark Optoelectronics (聯亞) closed at NT$640 (around US$20.45), up 4.4%. Browave (波若威) ended at NT$418.5 (around US$13.37), a 5.02% increase.
