TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of the Interior, MOI (內政部), blocked the social media platform RedNote (小紅書) for one year due to fraud-related content. The ministry took action after the platform failed to respond to official communications requesting improvements and security measures. The temporary block targets the Chinese social media app known for beauty, fashion, and lifestyle content among Taiwanese users.
Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislator Huang Jian-hao (黃建豪) questioned the National Communications Commission, NCC (國家通訊傳播委員會), on the proportionality of the measure. Huang raised concerns in the Transportation Committee at the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, suggesting the block could amount to censorship. The legislator challenged whether the one-year ban represents an appropriate government response to the platform's violations.
NCC acting chairperson Chen Chung-shu (陳崇樹) emphasized the commission respects the decision of competent authorities, noting proportionality remains key. Chen raised concerns about data security, stating cybersecurity represents national security for Taiwan's digital infrastructure and citizen protection. The acting chairperson highlighted the need to respect decisions from the Ministry of Digital Affairs, MODA (數發部), and MOI.
The Executive Yuan (行政院), Taiwan's cabinet, the Ministry of the Interior, and police agencies requested improvements from RedNote's parent company on Monday (Oct. 14). The government contacted Xingyin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. (行吟信息科技(上海)有限公司) through the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF, 海基會), but received no response. The lack of communication from the Chinese parent company prompted Taiwan's government to pursue stronger enforcement measures.
