TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Japan's government affirmed Tuesday (Nov. 25) that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's (高市早苗) parliamentary remarks on a Taiwan contingency do not change Japan's longstanding policy. The Cabinet confirmed this position during a Tuesday (Nov. 25) meeting, responding to a written inquiry from Komeito Party (公明黨), a coalition partner, leader Tetsuo Saito (齋藤鐵夫).
The government's written response emphasized that any determination of existential threat would require comprehensive information and objective assessment of specific circumstances. The reply reiterated Takaichi has consistently maintained the government's stance remains unchanged. Japan views peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as crucial for national security and international stability.
Saito urged the government to continue clearly communicating its unchanged policy to the international community. Takaichi stated on Nov. 7 that a Taiwan contingency could pose an existential threat to Japan if China sent armed forces to resolve the Taiwan issue. The remarks led to rising diplomatic tensions between China and Japan. ◼
