TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced Tuesday (Nov. 25) that 13 generals will receive promotions effective Dec. 1, emphasizing Taiwan's defense modernization priorities. Lai presided over the promotion ceremony and highlighted plans to introduce reconnaissance and unmanned vehicles to strengthen the "T-Dome" (台灣之盾). The president expressed gratitude to families supporting these military leaders.
Lai noted Taiwan's military has acquired advanced equipment including M1A2T tanks and HIMARS rocket systems. These acquisitions, combined with planned reconnaissance and unmanned vehicles, aim to build layered defense and effective air defense systems. Lai stated these measures will enhance defense capabilities and make them more resilient.
Lai emphasized the need to refine tactics and enhance information and communication environments to improve mobility and flexibility in military operations. The president urged generals to innovate tactical thinking to counter gray zone threats, threats that fall below armed conflict, effectively. These innovations aim to create a modernized defense force.
Lai acknowledged the professionalism and responsibility of lieutenant generals and major generals, calling them the military's crucial backbone. He emphasized developing asymmetric capabilities with democratic commitment to counter authoritarian expansion and technological advancements.
