TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (民眾黨) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) was named a defendant in a corruption case Tuesday (Nov. 18) by Taipei District Prosecutors Office (北檢). The charges stem from allegations linking his legislative inquiries to financial payments received by an associated company.
Mirror Media (鏡週刊) reported Huang questioned the fraud case of deceased garment factory chairman Chen Yu-hsiung (沈裕雄) in Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament. Democratic Progressive Party (民進黨) legislator Wang Yi-chuan (王義川) filed a complaint Oct. 3 accusing Huang and others of violating multiple laws. The complaint targets Huang, Li Li-chuan (李麗娟) of Kai Ssu International (凱思國際), and others under National Security Act (國安法) violations.
Mirror Media revealed Kai Ssu International allegedly received NT$2 million (around US$64,516) from Chen Chun-hung (沈淳浤), son of the deceased factory chairman. The payment coincided with Huang's legislative inquiries into the fraud case. Huang denied wrongdoing, stating he never accepted benefits while exposing corruption.
Prosecutors received public complaints alleging Huang's Legislative Yuan actions constituted bribery after Kai Ssu International received the NT$2 million (around US$64,516) payment. The case was consolidated with an ongoing espionage investigation involving paparazzi. Huang is now formally listed as a defendant under corruption charges. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$31)
