TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued heavy rain warnings Friday (Sept. 19) at 2:10 p.m. for multiple regions. The weather bureau warned mountainous areas in Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung counties face significant rainfall. The Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島), Hualien, Taitung counties, Orchid Island (蘭嶼), and Green Island (綠島) also received warnings.
The weather administration urged residents to remain alert for lightning, strong gusts, and potential flash flooding. Typhoon Mitag's (米塔) outer cloud bands bring occasional showers to Keelung's north coast, eastern regions, and Hengchun Peninsula. Southeastern Taiwan faces more pronounced rainfall from the typhoon's peripheral effects.
Meteorologists forecast partly cloudy or sunny conditions in other areas with brief afternoon thunderstorms and strong convective activity. Taoyuan, Tainan regions and mountainous areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung face heightened heavy rain risks. Weather officials advised residents to monitor conditions closely and carry rain gear during afternoon outings.
Typhoon Ragasa (樺加沙) advanced toward the Bashi Channel Friday morning, positioned 1,330 kilometers (827 miles) southeast of Cape Eluanbi. The storm will reach moderate typhoon strength and significantly impact Taiwan's weather Monday through Wednesday (Sept. 22-23). Typhoon Mitag heads toward Guangdong without threatening Taiwan directly, while distant Typhoon Neoguri (浣熊) poses no expected impact. ◼
