TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) urged Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) mayoral candidates Friday (Sept. 19) to discuss before primary elections. Chen emphasized primary elections remain viable if candidates cannot reach consensus on nominations. The mayor called for coordination among party members seeking the mayoral nomination.
Chen described poll results as "looking through a smokescreen" and emphasized the importance of support from party members and citizens. The mayor noted candidates have shown gentlemanly rivalry and hopes they will discuss improving Kaohsiung's governance. Chen highlighted how candidates present themselves matters significantly in the electoral process.
Chen remarked that candidates previously worked like siblings in the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament. The mayor believes they should understand how to face next year's election and present better political views. Chen expects candidates to propose visions that clarify policy stances for citizens.
Chen reiterated his hope for pre-primary discussions among candidates and expressed coordination would produce the best outcome. The mayor said candidates agreeing on an ideal nominee would be optimal for the party. Chen acknowledged that if candidates believe they are equally outstanding, primary elections would serve as an excellent solution. ◼
