TAIPEI (TVBS News) — China is making rapid strides in artificial intelligence development, but Taiwan serves as a critical bulwark against this advancement, AMD CEO Lisa Su (蘇姿丰) told U.S. lawmakers on Thursday (May 9). Su delivered her assessment during a high-profile Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation hearing focused on AI challenges, where she appeared alongside industry leaders including OpenAI's Sam Altman.

Speaking from her semiconductor industry expertise, Su emphasized America's current technological advantage in chip design and its dominance in producing cutting-edge AI accelerators. She pointed to China's technological constraints resulting from limited access to advanced semiconductor tools and processes. The Taiwan-born executive acknowledged U.S. President Donald Trump's semiconductor reshoring initiatives, characterizing these efforts as merely preliminary steps that demand more extensive strategic planning.

Su advocated for expanding America's footprint across multiple semiconductor manufacturing stages, from advanced wafer fabrication to sophisticated packaging and comprehensive system testing. The AMD chief executive highlighted how critical U.S. international partnerships remain for ensuring supply chain resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges. She expressed optimism about further strengthening these strategic alliances, particularly with Taiwan, which hosts many of the world's most advanced chip manufacturing facilities.

Following her testimony, Su spoke with Taiwan's national Central News Agency (CNA, 中央社), where she reinforced Taiwan's position as an indispensable U.S. partner in the semiconductor ecosystem. The AMD chief executive also emphasized Taiwan's importance as a key collaborative partner for her company's global operations and technology development initiatives. ★
