TAIPEI (TVBS News) — U.S. President Donald Trump declined on Feb. 26 (Wednesday) to respond to a question regarding whether he would prevent China from using force against Taiwan. Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting, Trump emphasized that he has a great relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平), expressing hope and expectation for Chinese investments in the U.S.

Also, he mentioned that he would build decent relations with China, East Asia, Russia, and Ukraine, and criticized those reports, suggesting the U.S. doesn't seek collaborations with China, as fake news. "I don't comment on it that because I don't want to ever put myself in that position," Trump said.

Similar statements appeared last December when he received an interview with NBC News. Trump revealed his hope that Beijing would refrain from military action against Taiwan during his presidency, reiterating his decent relationship with Xi, refusing to deliver a commitment to protect Taiwan with military forces because he would continue to negotiate with China.

Media reported that comparing the Biden administration with the Trump administration, the former had made clear commitments several times that the U.S. would send troops to interfere if China launched military actions over Taiwan.
