TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) emphasized on Monday (Dec. 9) the necessity of preserving Taiwan's free and democratic system in any cross-strait discussions. This firm stance, which calls for recognizing the Republic of China (Taiwan), highlights the intricate nature of cross-strait relations and the need for a balanced approach, following comments from Taiwan's former legislative speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) a day earlier, according to the cabinet-level administrative agency responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of cross-strait relations.
Wang unveiled a new cross-strait discourse and peace proposal at the "Middle Way Peace Alliance" (中道和平聯盟) event Sunday at the Taipei International Convention Center (台北國際會議中心), emphasizing the importance of addressing historical divisions. He proposed a practical approach to foster peace between Taiwan and China. Wang advocated for a framework where the "governing power of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is not subordinate to each other, and the sovereignty of the two sides is the same but not separate" (兩岸治權互不隸屬，主權同而不分). He also described "separate government but not separate institutions (分治而不分立) as the most pragmatic method for creating peace.
Wang noted that the two sides had pursued national unification for over 40 years due to historical factors and urged both parties to engage in dialogue with sincerity and patience to resolve the unification issue and seek the shared welfare of the Chinese nation. Observers expect these proposals to stimulate further dialogue on cross-strait relations, potentially shaping future engagements.
