TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Northern Taiwan awoke to scattered showers early Monday (April 21) morning, though conditions will gradually dry throughout the day, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Meanwhile, residents across the rest of the island can expect predominantly sunny to partly cloudy conditions, with only mountainous regions facing the possibility of isolated afternoon precipitation.

Most areas will experience temperatures ranging from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius (73.4 to 77°F), while western regions will see highs climbing to 31 to 34 degrees Celsius (87.8 to 93.2°F). Southern plains and mountain valleys could reach sweltering 35 or 36 degrees Celsius (95 to 96.8°F), prompting the CWA to urge outdoor enthusiasts to apply sun protection and maintain hydration. Taiwan's offshore islands will experience milder conditions: Penghu at 23-28°C (73.4-82.4°F), Kinmen at 22-27°C (71.6-80.6°F), and Matsu at 20-24°C (68-75.2°F).

Meteorologists warn the heat wave will persist through Tuesday, with temperatures in Taipei and southern inland regions potentially reaching 36 degrees Celsius (96.8°F). Taitung may experience foehn winds — warm, dry downslope air currents that can further elevate temperatures. By midweek, a weather front will traverse the region Wednesday into Thursday, delivering increased rainfall and possible thunderstorms to northern Taiwan and the offshore islands of Kinmen and Matsu.

A significant shift toward wet and cooler conditions is expected as a cloud and rain system advances eastward from China by the weekend. This system, combined with the strengthening northeast monsoon, will bring lower temperatures and scattered precipitation, particularly affecting northern and northeastern Taiwan and the offshore islands. By Sunday, forecasters anticipate the northeast monsoon will begin to weaken, allowing temperatures to rise gradually while rainfall diminishes, though brief showers may still occur in northern and eastern regions. ★
