TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a stunning display of resilience and skill, Taiwan's table tennis star Cheng I-Ching (鄭怡靜) clawed her way into the quarterfinals of the prestigious ITTF World Cup 2025 on Thursday (April 17), toppling Japanese Olympic bronze medalist Hina Hayata in a nail-biting seven-game thriller. The hard-fought 4-3 victory represents a major breakthrough for Taiwan in international table tennis competition, where Asian powerhouses typically dominate the landscape.

The world's 11th-ranked player demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude in overturning her historically unfavorable head-to-head record against Hayata, having previously managed just three victories against six defeats. Cheng burst out of the gates with devastating precision, claiming the first three games in convincing fashion: 13-11, 11-8, and 11-5. Hayata mounted a spirited comeback by capturing the next three games, but Cheng steeled herself in the decisive seventh game, ultimately prevailing with a tense 12-10 finish.

Cheng's path to the quarterfinals has been nothing short of exemplary. She dominated her preliminary group by dispatching South Korea's Kim Nayeong and Thailand's Suthasini Sawettabut in convincing fashion, securing the top position and a favorable draw in the elimination rounds. Her achievement takes on added significance as fellow Taiwanese competitor Feng Yi-hsin (馮翊新) bowed out in the men's singles round of 16, leaving Cheng as the island nation's last hope for a medal.

Looking ahead, Cheng awaits the victor of a high-stakes contest between China's formidable Sun Yingsha (孫穎莎), currently one of the world's premier players, and Austria's Sofia Polcanova, a rising European talent. The matchup carries particular emotional weight for Cheng, who suffered a quarterfinal defeat to Sun in last year's tournament. The possibility of a redemption match has already electrified Taiwan's passionate table tennis community. ★
