TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾管署), the island's primary public health authority, announced on Tuesday (April 1) the rollout of a second JN.1 COVID-19 vaccine dose specifically formulated for the prevalent variant, with distribution beginning next Tuesday for designated high-risk populations. The strategic public health decision aims to bolster protection for vulnerable senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals amid growing concern over a slight but notable uptick in COVID-19 cases across the self-governing island of 23 million people.

CDC Deputy spokesman Philip Lo (羅一鈞) emphasized the critical importance of timely vaccination for vulnerable populations during the agency's press briefing, noting that approximately 530,000 seniors aged 65 and above will become eligible for the second specialized dose by the end of April. Health officials meticulously outlined the necessity of this targeted booster shot, pointing to comprehensive data indicating both the persistent risk of virus transmission within communities and the scientifically documented phenomenon of waning vaccine efficacy over time, particularly among elderly populations whose immune responses typically diminish more rapidly.

According to detailed eligibility guidelines released by health authorities, priority groups for the second JN.1 dose encompass several clearly defined vulnerable populations: seniors aged 65 and above, Indigenous people aged 55 to 64 who face heightened health disparities, and individuals over six months old with clinically documented weakened immune systems. The latter category specifically includes cancer patients currently undergoing immunosuppressive therapy or who have received such treatments within the past year, organ and stem cell transplant recipients whose immune systems require special consideration, and patients diagnosed with moderate to severe congenital immunodeficiencies that compromise their body's natural defense mechanisms against viral infections.

The CDC's comprehensive vaccination statistics reveal that as of March 31, approximately 2.055 million people across Taiwan have received at least one dose of the specialized JN.1 vaccine, establishing a national vaccination rate of 8.65% for this particular formulation. Within this vaccinated population, health officials noted that 815,000 recipients are seniors, representing a more robust 17.95% vaccination rate among this high-priority demographic. In a stark illustration of the vaccine's effectiveness, epidemiological data indicates that over 90% of severe and fatal COVID-19 cases documented in recent months have occurred exclusively in individuals who did not receive the targeted JN.1 vaccine, underscoring the immunization's critical role in preventing serious outcomes.

While health officials maintain that the overall proportion of COVID-19 cases relative to population size remains stable, surveillance data presented a concerning development with the CDC reporting a new COVID-related death last week in an unvaccinated individual, highlighting the continued risk to those without immunization protection. Epidemiological monitoring has detected that the number of COVID-related outpatient and emergency department visits increased by 4.9% compared to the previous week's figures, a metric that public health experts interpret as indicating a slight but meaningful rise in the pandemic's activity across Taiwan. The CDC characterized its expanded vaccination initiative as a proactive public health measure specifically designed to preemptively curb any potential escalation of severe cases and preventable fatalities, with officials strongly urging all eligible individuals to participate promptly in the vaccination drive before any further viral spread occurs.
