CHANGHUA (TVBS News) — Changhua City Office (彰化市公所) distributed Lunar New Year gifts to seniors aged 70 and above on Thursday (Jan. 16), providing each with NT$6,000. This initiative, totaling over NT$180 million, aims to ensure a joyful celebration for the elderly.
Approximately 30,000 eligible seniors received the benefit, with most opting for direct deposits. However, some preferred to collect their gifts in person. Mayor Lin Shish-hsien (林世賢) personally handed out the red envelopes and noodles at locations like the Wan An Neighborhood Office (萬安里辦公室) for those who chose to pick up their gifts.
Lin noted that the city office has been distributing these gifts since 1997, initially offering NT$5,000 per person. He explained that the amount adjusts based on the city's financial resources. He added that as long as the municipal office has its own financial resources amounting to NT$1 billion or more, the elderly will receive NT$6,000 each. Otherwise, they will receive up to NT$5,000.
