TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Department of Health (台北市衛生局) intensified its flu vaccination efforts as the Lunar New Year approaches, launching 18 additional free vaccination sites from Thursday (Jan. 16). It aims to offer protection before the holiday surge in travel and gatherings, which historically coincide with flu season peaks.
The department reported 41 severe flu cases from October last year to last Sunday, with 85.4% involving individuals over 50, and 92.7% of cases unvaccinated. Chronic illnesses were present in 90% of these cases, which resulted in six deaths. Officials urged the public to get vaccinated before traveling or attending gatherings, noting that flu vaccines take about two weeks to become effective.
In response, Taipei has set up vaccination stations at seven MRT stations, including Shuanglian (雙連) and Longshan Temple (龍山寺), community centers, and shopping areas. The city also offers free vaccinations at 374 contracted clinics, including 12 outpatient departments of Taipei City Hospital (台北市立聯合醫院).
Since Jan. 1, flu vaccines have been available to individuals over six months old, with over 30,000 doses administered by Jan. 12. Approximately 40,000 doses remain, and officials encourage high-risk groups, such as seniors, children, and those with chronic conditions, to get vaccinated. The department emphasized that young people can protect themselves and vulnerable family members by getting vaccinated.
