TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾管署) announced on Tuesday (Dec. 17) that starting Jan. 1, 2025, the government will expand free influenza vaccine availability to all residents over six months old who have not yet been vaccinated, continuing until supplies run out. Officials aim to enhance public protection as the flu season approaches.

The CDC urged high-risk groups, including seniors over 65, individuals with chronic illnesses, students, and preschool children, to receive their vaccinations before the nationwide rollout. Since Nov. 1, the CDC has offered free vaccinations to those aged 50-64 without high-risk chronic conditions, emphasizing early protection.

The CDC reported approximately 5.626 million doses administered, achieving over 85% usage of available vaccines, with about 960,000 doses remaining as of Monday. More than 4,000 contract facilities, including some health centers, provide vaccination services. Residents can find nearby facilities through local health bureau websites or the CDC's online platforms and contact the contract facilities to schedule appointments.

The CDC highlighted that seniors and children face the highest risk of severe illness and death from influenza. While the vaccine cannot entirely prevent infection, the World Health Organization recommends it as the most effective measure to reduce severe cases and fatalities. The CDC warned that the flu season is imminent and urged early vaccination ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Year, which occurs earlier than usual next year.

In addition to vaccination, the CDC advised maintaining good hygiene, wearing masks, seeking medical attention for flu-like symptoms, and resting at home to minimize virus transmission. For inquiries about influenza vaccines or prevention, residents can visit the CDC's website or call the toll-free hotline 1922 (or 0800-001922).
