TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's flagship carrier China Airlines (華航) took another step toward modernizing its long-haul fleet Monday (March 31), finalizing a substantial order for 10 Airbus A350-1000 wide-body aircraft in a ceremony that signals the airline's ambitious global expansion plans. The new aircraft, scheduled for delivery beginning in 2029, will primarily serve the carrier's lucrative trans-Pacific and European routes, where passenger demand has shown steady growth despite recent global economic fluctuations. This strategic acquisition represents a significant investment in the airline's future capacity and its commitment to elevating the passenger experience on its most challenging ultra-long-haul routes.
The procurement agreement was formalized through a signing ceremony attended by China Airlines Chairman Kao Shing-hwang (高星潢) and Benoit de Saint-Exupery, who serves as Airbus' executive vice president of commercial aircraft marketing. During the event, Chairman Kao highlighted the exceptional capabilities of the A350-1000, emphasizing its substantial passenger capacity, impressive operational range, and enhanced cabin comfort features that surpass the airline's current generation of long-haul aircraft. With evident pride, Kao designated the A350-1000 as the future flagship of China Airlines' international fleet, underscoring its importance in the carrier's long-term strategic vision.
The acquisition forms a central component of China Airlines' comprehensive fleet optimization strategy, designed to position the carrier favorably amid projections of increasing international travel demand in the post-pandemic era. Beyond the 10 firm orders announced Monday, the agreement includes options for five additional A350-1000 aircraft, providing the airline with valuable flexibility to adjust its expansion pace in response to market conditions. This forward-thinking approach to fleet planning will significantly transform the composition of China Airlines' long-haul operations — once all ordered aircraft are integrated, A350-1000s will constitute more than 25 percent of the carrier's total fleet, creating economies of scale that promise to enhance overall operational efficiency and cost management.
Looking toward comprehensive fleet modernization, Chairman Kao also disclosed plans for an extensive cabin upgrade program for the airline's existing fleet of 15 A350-1000 aircraft, scheduled to commence in 2027. Airbus will oversee the complex integration and technical aspects of this refurbishment project, ensuring consistency across the carrier's A350 operations. The combined effect of these new acquisitions and cabin renovations will establish a unified, premium A350 product that will serve as China Airlines' flagship offering in the international market. Company executives expressed confidence that these strategic investments in fleet renewal and passenger experience will significantly strengthen the carrier's competitive position against both regional and global competitors as international air travel continues its recovery trajectory.
