TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market opened with a slight decline on Monday (March 10) as early trading saw fluctuations around the flat line. The market briefly dropped over 100 points, falling below 22,500 points. TSMC (台積電) experienced a decline of NT$13, over 1%, reaching a new low for the year at NT$922. Meanwhile, MediaTek (聯發科) fell nearly 3%, while Hon Hai (鴻海) saw a minor dip of NT$1. The three major shipping companies also reported losses.
Industry-specific indices showed mixed results. The glass sector led with a 3.61% increase, and the oil and fuel sector rose by 1.03%. The electromechanical index and other electronics stocks increased by 0.89% and 0.92%, respectively, indicating that investors continue to favor tech-related industries. However, home-related stocks saw a slight drop of 0.2%.
The conceptual stocks also leaned towards gains, with the memory chip group rising by 2.02%, marking it as a focal point in today's market. Fan-out panel level packaging (FOPLP) concept stocks increased by 1.23%, while thermal management and BBU stocks rose by 1.27% and 1.53%, respectively, demonstrating sustained interest in the tech supply chain.
U.S. stock markets closed with gains across all four major indices last Friday. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose by 141.74 points, or 3.16%, while the Dow Jones increased by 222.64 points, or 0.52%. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 indexes also saw increases of 126.97 points, and 31.68 points, respectively.
