TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan and Canada have taken a significant step towards strengthening their scientific collaboration by signing the Science, Technology, and Innovation Agreement (STIA) and holding the inaugural Taiwan-Canada Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology in Ottawa, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC, 國科會) announced in a statement on Friday (March 7).
The statement suggested that a meeting was co-hosted a day earlier by the deputy minister of Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council Chen Bing-yu (陳炳宇), and Charles Vincent, assistant deputy minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, marking a significant milestone in the two nations' partnership.
Vincent noted that the Science, STIA signed in April of last year, lays the groundwork for expanded cooperation in scientific research. Both sides signed the Taiwan-Canada Science and Technology Cooperation Research Memorandum, with representatives Harry Zeng (曾厚仁) and Jim Nickel signing on behalf of their respective countries.
Chen said that Canada possesses an advantage in AI techniques, emphasizing the potential for closer collaboration in these areas. This initiative will see joint efforts between the National Science and Technology Council and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada in information and communication technology and net-zero technology.
Chen's visit also included meetings with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and the University of Toronto, which plans to hold the annual bilateral consultation meeting with the National Research Council of Canada for future cooperation and talent cultivation strategies.
