TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) confirmed Friday (March 7) that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) will retain its critical technology in Taiwan, dismissing concerns of it becoming a "U.S. Semiconductor Manufacturing Company."
Kuo emphasized that Taiwan's engineers will develop TSMC's latest technology, ensuring its innovation remains rooted locally. In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump and TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) announced on Monday a US$100 billion reinvestment by TSMC in the United States.
Wei clarified Thursday that this expansion aims to meet customer demand, not to seek subsidies, and TSMC only demands fair competition. The investment will not affect TSMC's plans in Japan and Taiwan, as all projects will proceed as scheduled.
Kuo highlighted that TSMC's research and development center in the U.S. will enhance manufacturing process yields by leveraging local talent. Despite the expansion, Kuo assured that TSMC plans to build 11 new production lines in Taiwan, with President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) assistance in securing additional land. He noted that Taiwan's land and energy resources can support TSMC's needs, with further efforts in water and electricity to meet domestic market demands.
