KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung's Agriculture Bureau (農業局) announced on Wednesday (March 5) that two ferret badgers tested positive for rabies this year, intensifying vaccination efforts for dogs and cats in areas where these animals were found. The bureau emphasized the importance of annual rabies vaccinations to maintain immunity among pets.
Officials sent samples from animal carcasses to the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) for rabies testing, with 22 cases submitted from last year to this year. While three ferret badgers tested negative last year, two cases from Taoyuan District (桃源區) tested positive this year. Meanwhile, a bat from Daliao District (大寮區) tested negative.
The Agriculture Bureau reported that over 90% of registered dogs and cats received rabies vaccinations last year. The bureau urged pet owners to continue vaccinating their pets annually. Moreover, the Animal Protection Office (動保處) advised hikers to carry trekking poles and wear high boots for protection. The office also urged people to stay calm and avoid contact with wild animals, such as ferret badgers, and discouraged raising, trapping, or touching them.
As the Agriculture Bureau continues its efforts to control rabies, the public's cooperation remains vital in preventing the spread of this disease. The bureau's call to action highlights the importance of vigilance and preventive measures in safeguarding human and animal health.
