TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Following actor Darren Wang's (王大陸) detainment on assault charges, Uber expressed deep concern for the victim and his family on Wednesday (March 5), emphasizing the importance of the incident to the company and its partners. The company added that they are actively investigating the matter. Authorities charged Wang after facing allegations of orchestrating an attack on a Uber driver. Wang's co-defendant, Yu Hsiang-min (游翔閔), remains in detention without visitation rights.
The incident traces back to April 2024, when Wang allegedly argued with an Uber driver over unfamiliarity with directions, which led to Wang leaving his house keys in the vehicle. Wang reportedly complained to a friend surnamed Yu, who unsuccessfully sought the driver's information from Uber's headquarters using credit card charge details. Yu then allegedly enlisted gang members to locate the driver by the vehicle's license plate, intercepting him in the Zhonghe District and assaulting him while recording the incident for Wang.
Prosecutors uncovered the assault video on Wang's phone during an investigation into his alleged draft evasion, bringing the case to light. The unfolding legal proceedings may reveal further details, and Uber's continued involvement suggests potential policy implications for handling similar incidents in the future.
