TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Investors in Taiwan witnessed a mixed market performance as the stock market opened at 23,446.46 points on Thursday (Feb. 27), showing a modest increase of 43.91 points, or 0.19%. TSMC (台積電) led the charge in the early session, with its stock price rising by NT$5 to reach NT$1,065.
Among other stocks, Hon Hai (鴻海) slipped by NT$0.5 to NT$180, while MediaTek (聯發科) fell by NT$5 to NT$1,555. Quanta (廣達) remained stable at NT$260, and Evergreen (長榮) gained NT$0.5 to reach NT$220. Electronic stocks saw a 0.3% increase, but financial stocks dipped by about 0.1%. The over-the-counter index, representing smaller stocks, rose by 0.7%.
Sector performance revealed a stark contrast, with some industries struggling. Electrical equipment stocks fell by 0.81%, cement by 0.33%, and both biotech and home products by 0.30%. Conversely, the electromechanical sector climbed 0.89%, transportation 0.93%, steel 1.28%, and glass surged by 2.86%. The market showed significant volatility, prompting investors to closely monitor market fluctuations and corporate earnings reports to navigate short-term turbulence.
U.S. stock indices presented a varied picture a day earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 188.04 points, or 0.43%, closing at 43,433.12. The S&P 500 edged up by 0.81 points, or 0.01%, to 5,956.06. The Nasdaq increased by 48.87 points, or 0.26%, to 19,075.26, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose by 101.94 points, or 2.09%, to 4,990.82.
