TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market opened at 23,276.08 points, climbing 55.95 points or 0.24% on Thursday (Dec. 26). The market's positive start followed a holiday closure in the U.S., where major indices had previously closed higher. Analysts expect a quiet trading atmosphere this week due to a lack of significant policy and economic data.
Key stocks showed varied performances at the opening. TSMC (台積電) remained flat at NT$1,085, while Hon Hai (鴻海) increased by NT$1 to NT$187.5. Quanta (廣達) rose NT$2.5 to NT$294.5, Yang Ming (陽明) edged up NT$0.3 to NT$77.7.
The previous trading day in the U.S. saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average rise by 390.08 points, or 0.91%, closing at 43,297.03. The S&P 500 increased by 65.97 points, or 1.1%, to 6,040.04, while the Nasdaq surged 266.24 points, or 1.35%, to 20,031.13. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also climbed 54.81 points, or 1.07%, ending at 5,173.56.
Despite the Fed's cautious signal on rate cuts, market sentiment remains buoyed by strong corporate investment confidence, stable labor market growth, and robust consumer spending. The Christmas and New Year sales are expected to perform well, sustaining the "Christmas rally."
