TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market surged over 100 points in early trading on Monday (Jan. 20), opening at 23,203 points and reaching a high of 23,297 points. TSMC (台積電) opened at NT$1,125, peaking at NT$1,130, marking a 0.9% increase. Today's stock rise allowed the market to surpass key moving averages, including the 5-day line at 22,945 points, the 20-day line at 23,092 points, and the monthly line at 22,993 points.
Among Taiwan's major electronic stocks, Hon Hai (鴻海) opened higher at NT$174.5, rising by NT$1 and peaking at NT$176.5, a 1.73% increase. MediaTek (聯發科) started lower, dropping NT$5 to NT$1,425, but turned positive, reaching NT$1,440, up NT$10 or 0.70%. Meanwhile, Delta Electronics (台達電) opened with a NT$3 gain at NT$425, climbing to NT$428.5, a 1.54% increase. Quanta Computer (廣達) opened at NT$260, initially dropping NT$0.5, but later rose to NT$263.5, a 1.15% gain.
U.S. stocks closed higher on the last trading day before President Donald Trump's inauguration. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 334.70 points, or 0.78%, to close at 43,487.83 points. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed 146.77 points, or 2.84%, to 5,309.738 points. However, TSMC's American depositary receipt fell 1.53% to $211.50.
